Keeping Our Sanity During Baby's First Year

Can You Take Benadryl While Pregnant?

Will you hurt my baby?

Tonight I broke out into a bad case of hives. The only thing that usually helps is Benadryl but I wasn’t sure if I could take it since I haven’t seen my doctor yet. I quickly Googled my question and found that most people said their doctors told them it was safe to take while pregnant.

Apparently, Benadryl is considered a “B” class medication, which means that there is a reasonable amount of experience with a medication during pregnancy and no reason to believe that it would cause harm to the baby. Medications that have been deemed safe during pregnancy are rated as an “A” class medication.  Most allergy medications used during pregnancy are rated as a “B” class medication, which means that there is a reasonable amount of experience with a medication during pregnancy and no reason to believe that it would cause harm to the baby.  Medications that are rated “C” have little or no information or studies that show how it affects pregnancy in women. I found this information on this site, but many other sites echo the same info.

I hope so because I just swallowed it. Yikes!

  1. You can always check safefetus.com and it will tell you what category a medication is. Very helpful.
