Keeping Our Sanity During Baby's First Year

Run Like the Wind

Please don't hurt me, Mommy

Yesterday I hopped on the treadmill at my gym and was looking forward to running a few miles in my new Nike Frees. I started out OK but after a half mile, I freaked out and stopped. I did a lot of research beforehand on if I could continue running during pregnancy and the consensus was yes. But, with a few caveats. First, you should only run if you ran regularly before you were pregnant and you shouldn’t try to up your mileage while pregnant. Also, You need to be careful to hydrate and not get overheated.

It was the overheating part that got me. And the thought that I was somehow jostling my baby loose from my uterine lining. I just pictured a hard boiled egg being tossed around my uterus. I know these thoughts are ridiculous, but I couldn’t help it. So, I ended up walking 2.5 miles instead. Today, I am going to try to run 2 miles and walk 2 miles and slow my pace from 6.0 miles/hour to 5.5 miles/hour. I think that will help alleviate some of those fears.

I really want to be one of those cool moms who run right up until they have the baby and then hop right back on the treadmill a week after giving birth. We’ll see how far I can make it.
