Keeping Our Sanity During Baby's First Year

Glider Update

As you may remember from my mood board, my dream glider was this one from Babyletto – the Nara glider for $699. I loved the modern and simple lines and I would have loved to pair it with the CB2 knit camo pouf for $89.95.

Unfortunately, this combo was way beyond our budget. I stressed for a long time over whether I would even get a glider at all, but I realized I would need some seating in the room if I’m going to feed her at night, so I resolved to find an alternative glider.

I was disappointed to find that all the gliders in our price range were very traditional looking. And believe me, I researched and researched gliders for weeks. Fully upholstered gliders are just way more expensive than the wood/cushion combos. Also, they tend to have a larger footprint which is problematic in our small space nursery.

My bible recomended Dutailier gliders and the online reviews seemed to agree. Rich and I went to look at gliders at our local baby stores and it did seem like the Dutailier gliders are more well made than many of the other brands. But here is something I discovered – most of the glider manufacturers make different level of gliders at various price points. So, while you can get a Dutailier glider and ottoman at Target for $349, it may not be the same quality glider as what is sold in high end stores and may not come with the features you want. It can be very confusing, especially of you are looking for a good deal on Amazon, Overstock, etc. The price tag for a Dutalier with a high back (this was a very important feature for us as we are both tall people and most cheaper gliders do not have a tall back), locking mechanism (so you can choose for the glider to rock or not – this is both a safety and practical feature) and reclining option can run $449 and up. This does not include the ottoman which can run around $150. You will spend even even more money if you want to custom order the glider in the wood finish and fabric of your choice. So, I might as well break down and buy the Nara glider after all, right?

There was one other option I had left and that was I watched it every week to see if someone posted a Dutailier glider that fit our criteria. Then, one day, Eureka! I found a glider/ottoman combo for only $125. Rich and I went and tested the glider and it was only a year old, had a tall back, a locking mechanism and could lock in the reclining position. Yay! We hauled it straight to the nursery.

The light wood frame matched our nursery but the blue cushions were a little dark for the room. I found a site where I could order super cozy slipcovers and voila! A new glider, ottoman combo that matched our nursery. The best part is that the slipcovers are so easy to wash and care for so I won’t have to haul the cushions to the dry cleaners after any spills/messes.

So, maybe the glider is not the super sleek glider I had in my head when I first started designing the room but the one we ended up with fits the room nicely, has all the features we want and is really comfortable – which, at the end of the day, is probably the most important feature to have.

p.s. I ordered the cute owl pillow off from Kainkain for only $20!

  1. Way to go KG! Looking good in there.

  2. My favorite part was the sweet, if not horribly misspelled, thank you note from the Indonesian pillow cover maker. She wants us to “convo” her if we have any questions. Awesome.

  3. Ha! Yes, the note had some misspellings but “convo” is actually Esty lingo :)
